It is convieniant to use the tool, because it plugs into the cycle locator hole and therfore one is doing the measurement at the correct position.
I guess that Jose's method of 3/4 inch play would work. How do Harley Davidson owners check their belts?? They probably see if they can pass their thumb, under the belt around the pulley!!
